Please tell us a little bit about yourself

I began my career by qualifying in structural engineering, designing timber roof trusses and surveying residential properties, combining this with hands-on construction work. This early experience gave me a strong technical foundation and a practical understanding of construction and building design, allowing me to later on in life renovate, build and extend properties in the Midlands and North Wales.

I went on to spend 30 years in the fire and rescue sector, building a career that took me from frontline response to senior leadership. As a senior Operational Commander with West Midlands Fire Service, I held a number of critical roles, including Incident Commander, specialising in health, safety, and risk management at complex emergency incidents. My responsibilities also included working as a hazardous substances identification and monitoring officer and serving as a Brigade Press Officer. During this time, I also had the opportunity to work alongside UK intelligence services during the London Olympics, contributing to national resilience and security planning.

Throughout my service, I commanded operations at numerous major incidents, often in high-risk, life-threatening environments, with a clear focus on protecting both the public and emergency personnel.

My experience extended internationally through my involvement with International Search and Rescue. In this role, I worked in collaboration with organisations such as the European Union, the United Nations, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. I also played a key role in developing a Command and Control system to support the safe and effective deployment of UK firefighters responding to global natural disasters.

Alongside my professional career, I have led and supported teams on projects and adventures across Europe, South America, and Africa, including locations such as the Amazon Rainforest, Ecuador, Morocco, Namibia, and South Africa. These experiences have strengthened my leadership skills and deepened my appreciation for teamwork in challenging environments.

I am passionate about the outdoors and thrive on physical challenges. My interests include mountaineering, ice climbing, rock climbing, hill walking, and travel. I am always seeking new adventures that push me both mentally and physically.

In addition, I am a Reiki practitioner, which reflects my belief in a balanced approach to wellbeing. This holistic perspective supports resilience, recovery, and overall health, complementing my professional background in high-pressure environments

How long have you been with Different Travel? How did you get involved?

I have been with Different Travel for just one year. My journey with them began after a recommendation from a close friend who had travelled with them for many years.

Hearing about their positive experiences, the sense of community, and the well-organised trips gave me the inspiration to get involved. Since then, I’ve experienced firsthand the supportive atmosphere and shared purpose that make Different Travel so special, and I’m extremely grateful to have become part of such a dedicated and inspiring team.

What was your first Different Travel trip? What made it special?

For my first trip as a Tour Manager with Different Travel, I was incredibly proud to help support St Bernardo’s charity as they took on the challenge of climbing Mount Toubkal in the Atlas Mountains of North Africa.

This journey was about far more than reaching the summit—it reflected the strength, compassion, and unity of a group of people brought together by a shared purpose. Each step we took was driven by the desire to support and uplift each other, embodying the values at the heart of the charity.

Through determination, teamwork, and a spirit of generosity, the participants hoped to inspire each other and make a meaningful difference, carrying the name of St Bernardo’s with pride every step of the way and raising significant funds for the charity and the children they support.

What has been your most memorable Different Travel adventure to date?

Choosing my most memorable Different Travel adventure is no easy task, having only been on two incredible trips. Both experiences—the trek up Mount Toubkal and the journey through the Sahara Desert—were truly unforgettable, largely because of the exceptional people I shared them with. The close bonds that formed between individuals from such diverse backgrounds was remarkable, as everyone supported and motivated each other through challenges, pushing beyond their personal comfort zones. These shared moments of resilience, laughter, and teamwork made both adventures truly extraordinary and deeply inspiring.

The most memorable moment on Mt Toubkal was witnessing the sheer joy, excitement, and, for some, the relief of reaching the 4,167-metre summit. A few achieved it within their comfort zone; most pushed through varying levels of discomfort, digging deep to overcome personal limits; and a handful truly struggled, yet showed remarkable determination, drive, and willpower to succeed. It was a deeply humbling and inspiring experience.

As for the trek through the Sahara, it was once again the participants’ determination, drive, and willpower that left a lasting impression on me. Confronted by the harsh terrain and intense heat of the desert, they pushed far beyond their usual comfort zones. In doing so, they showed remarkable resilience and achieved something truly special, while also forming deep connections with people they might never have met in everyday life. Those friendships will endure, as will my memories of them—making it a truly memorable and beautiful life experience.

If you could go on an adventure with three people (past or present, real or fictional), who would they be and why?

If I could go on an adventure with three people, they would be Nimsdai Purja, Mikao Usui, and Joe Simpson.

Nimsdai Purja’s extraordinary mountaineering feats and unshakable determination would inspire me to push beyond my limits and tackle challenges with courage and focus.

Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki, would bring a calming, mindful presence, helping to cultivate resilience, balance, and clarity even in the most demanding moments.

Joe Simpson, whose extraordinary survival story and mountaineering expertise have inspired so many, would provide practical knowledge, motivation, and a deep appreciation for the power of perseverance in the face of adversity.

Together, their diverse strengths—physical endurance, mental clarity, and survival wisdom—would make the adventure both transformative and unforgettable.

What is your ultimate dream destination?

Trying to select just one dream destination is virtually impossible, as there are so many places I would love to experience; however, if pushed, I would say that my ultimate dream destination would be a journey that takes me from the remote landscapes of Upper Mustang in Nepal to the icy expanses of Antarctica, and then into the towering peaks of the Karakoram Range in Pakistan. Each destination offers something unique: Upper Mustang for its rich cultural experiences and sense of isolation that allows for deep reflection; Antarctica for its raw, otherworldly wilderness and the challenge of navigating extreme, pristine terrain; and the Karakoram Range for its awe-inspiring mountains and demanding adventure that pushes both mind and body. Together, these places represent the perfect blend of isolation, cultural immersion, challenging terrain, and true adventure—everything I seek in a life-changing expedition.

Which Different Travel adventure appeals to you, and why?

The Different Travel adventures that appeal to me most are the treks to Mount Everest Base Camp and Kilimanjaro.

Mount Everest Base Camp draws me with its iconic Himalayan landscapes, the chance to experience Nepalese culture up close, and the challenge of trekking through high-altitude terrain surrounded by some of the world’s tallest peaks.

Kilimanjaro, on the other hand, offers an incredible adventure across diverse ecosystems—from rainforest to alpine desert—culminating in the thrill of standing at Africa’s highest point.

Both journeys promise not only physical and mental challenges but also the opportunity to connect with extraordinary people, form lasting bonds, and create memories that are as inspiring as the landscapes themselves.

What do you love about working with Different Travel

What I love about working with Different Travel on their Treks Around the World is the perfect blend of adventure, purpose, and connection it offers.

Being part of these trips allows me to share incredible experiences with people from all walks of life, witnessing firsthand how travel can push boundaries, build confidence, and create lasting friendships.

I thrive on helping others navigate challenging terrain, discover new cultures, and step out of their comfort zones, while also being inspired by their resilience and enthusiasm. Every journey feels meaningful—not just as an adventure—but as a chance to support, motivate, and be part of something that leaves a really positive impact on both the participants and the places we explore.

I am extremely grateful to Different Travel for allowing me to take part in such adventures.
