Your route takes you deep into Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, where you’ll explore the magnificent Sigiriya Rock Fortress and ancient Dambulla Cave Temple. Continue into the hill country to visit the sacred city of Kandy before travelling past tumbling waterfalls, emerald tea plantations and mist-covered mountains to Nuwara Eliya and Ella.

An experienced English-speaking Operations Officer will lead the convoy throughout the journey, with roadside assistance and a nationwide network of mechanics providing additional peace of mind. Comfortable hotels, welcoming homestays and all meals are included, leaving you free to enjoy every moment of the adventure.
The tuk tuks are sourced through a network of local owners, helping Sri Lankan families benefit directly from tourism. This makes the journey more than an exciting way to explore the island. It is also an opportunity to travel like a local, connect with communities and make a positive contribution as you go.
This adventure does not require a high level of physical fitness, but you should be comfortable with spending several hours each day driving or travelling in a tuk tuk. Daily journeys may last between two and four hours, sometimes on uneven, winding or busy roads. Driving a manual tuk tuk requires concentration, coordination and a reasonable level of mobility, particularly when getting in and out of the vehicle.
Some sightseeing visits involve walking over uneven ground and climbing steps. The visit to Sigiriya Rock Fortress is the most physically demanding activity, with a steep climb of approximately 1,200 steps to reach the summit.
Sri Lanka’s heat and humidity can make driving and sightseeing feel more tiring than expected. You should prepare by remaining active before departure, with regular walking and some stair climbing recommended. You must also be able to remain alert and safely operate the tuk tuk for the duration of each driving day.
You will receive comprehensive driver training and a vehicle briefing before setting off. However, all participants wishing to drive must hold the required driving documents and be confident that they can safely control the vehicle. You do not have to drive and can take part as a passenger, sharing the tuk tuk with another member of the group.
This trip is suitable for anyone in good health, with a reasonable level of fitness and a positive, adventurous mindset.

You must be at least 18 years old to participate in this trip unaccompanied. It may be possible to take part if you are aged 16 or 17, provided you are accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Please note that participants under 18 will not be permitted to drive a tuk tuk.
There is no upper age limit, provided you are in good health and meet the fitness and mobility requirements of the trip. All participants wishing to drive must meet the relevant licence and insurance requirements.
To drive a tuk tuk in Sri Lanka, you must bring your valid UK driving licence and a physical International Driving Permit (IDP) with a B or C endorsement. UK residents can obtain an IDP in person from a participating PayPoint store. You can find your nearest participating store and check the latest requirements on the GOV.UK driving abroad website.
Our local partner will use these documents to arrange the required Sri Lankan Recognition Permit, including the three-wheel endorsement, ready for your arrival. Further instructions and a licence application form will be provided defore departure.
You will be accompanied throughout the journey by an experienced English-speaking Operations Officer, who will lead the tuk tuk convoy and provide support along the route. A nationwide network of local mechanics and roadside assistance will also be available if required. You will also be accompanied by a Different Travel Company UK Tour Manager.
You should arrive in Sri Lanka well prepared for the adventure and ready for the demands of driving or travelling in a tuk tuk through a variety of environments.
Although this is not a trekking challenge, some preparation will help you enjoy the experience to the fullest. Regular walking, general cardiovascular exercise and stair climbing are recommended, particularly in preparation for sightseeing visits such as Sigiriya Rock Fortress.

Sri Lanka has a tropical climate and is generally hot and humid throughout the year. Although the country has recognised wet and dry seasons, the distinction between them is not always clear, and rainfall can occur at any time.
Daytime temperatures have historically reached around 30°C, dropping to approximately 23°C at night. Conditions will feel noticeably cooler in the higher-altitude areas of Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella, particularly during the mornings and evenings. Humidity is typically high, often reaching 78% or above, which can make driving and sightseeing feel more tiring.
Weather patterns and rainfall can be unpredictable, so you should be prepared for a mixture of sunshine, heat and tropical showers throughout the journey.
The driving conditions will vary considerably throughout the journey, from busy towns and winding mountain roads to quieter rural routes. Road surfaces may be uneven in places, and heavy rain can make conditions more challenging. You should be prepared for potholes, changing traffic conditions and sharing the road with a wide variety of vehicles, pedestrians and animals.
Sightseeing visits will involve some walking on uneven ground, steps and paths that may become wet or slippery after rain. The climb to Sigiriya Rock Fortress includes approximately 1,200 steps and is the most physically demanding activity, although an easier alternative will be available.
Comprehensive driver training and a vehicle briefing will be provided before the tuk tuk journey begins. Those wishing to drive should feel confident remaining alert and safely controlling the vehicle in varied and unfamiliar conditions.
You will stay in a combination of comfortable hotels, bungalows and welcoming homestays throughout the trip. Rooms are allocated on a twin-share basis and have en-suite facilities. A single supplement may be available at an additional cost, subject to availability.
The hotels, bungalows and homestays have en-suite bathrooms with flushing Western-style toilets.
During driving days, regular comfort stops will be made at suitable locations along the route. Facilities may be more basic in rural areas, so carrying toilet paper, hand sanitiser and small disposal bags is recommended. Please dispose of all toilet paper and sanitary products responsibly and never leave litter behind.
Sri Lankan cuisine is full of flavour and commonly features chilli, ginger, coconut, aromatic spices and fresh vegetables. Meals will include a variety of local dishes, often accompanied by rice, curries and sambols, giving you plenty of opportunities to experience the country’s food and culture.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included throughout the trip and will be provided by the hotels, homestays and local restaurants. Please inform us of any dietary requirements or allergies in advance so these can be shared with our local team. While every effort will be made to accommodate them, options may be more limited in rural areas.
During the journey, you will transport all your luggage in the tuk tuk. Space inside the tuk tuks is limited, so luggage must be kept to the size and type specified in the trip kit list.
Your kit list will be uploaded here shortly.
