This trek is graded as ‘moderate – challenging’, with some more strenuous elements across the three trekking days. Participants can expect long days on foot, with distances ranging from 16 to 18km per day and ascents of up to 850m whilst carrying a backpack with steady climbs through forest, alpine meadows, and rocky mountain terrain, reaching altitudes of up to 2,300m.
The Tatra Mountains, often referred to as the “mini Alps,” form a natural border between northern Slovakia and southern Poland. Despite their relatively compact size, the Tatras offer dramatic alpine scenery, with jagged peaks, glacial lakes, deep valleys, and lush forests. The Slovak side, home to the High Tatras (VysokĂ© Tatry), is renowned for its pristine trails, well-marked routes, and breathtaking views, making it a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. Wildlife such as chamois, marmots, and golden eagles can often be spotted, and the region’s rich biodiversity is protected as part of the Tatra National Park. Charming mountain villages like Stary Smokovec and TatranskĂ¡ Lomnica provide easy access to the trails and offer a warm welcome to visitors. With a combination of natural beauty, rich folklore, and excellent infrastructure, the Tatras offer an unforgettable trekking experience for those seeking adventure in a spectacular but lesser-known corner of Europe.
To take part in this trek, you’ll need a good level of fitness and should be comfortable walking for 6–7 hours a day over multiple consecutive days. The routes include steady ascents of up to 850m, some rocky and uneven mountain terrain, and on one day, chain-assisted sections and ladders through a gorge, so stamina, balance, and confidence on varied terrain are important. You don’t need to be an elite athlete, but you should have some previous hiking experience, ideally involving hills or mountains.
f you can comfortably complete full-day hikes in the UK (such as in the Lake District, Snowdonia, or Scottish Highlands), you should be well prepared. Regular cardiovascular exercise, such as walking, running, or cycling, alongside strength and balance training, is recommended in the months leading up to the trip.
The first two days involve steady climbs through forest, alpine meadows, and rocky mountain terrain, reaching altitudes of up to 2,300m, where the thinner air may be noticeable for some. While the paths are generally well-marked, the length and elevation gain require a good level of hillwalking fitness and stamina. The third trekking day shifts focus from altitude to technical terrain, as participants navigate gorges using ladders, chain-assisted walkways, and steel footbridges. Although the ascent is lower, this section demands balance, a head for heights, and surefootedness.
No experience is necessary.
Accommodation during the trek is typically in a comfortable 3-star in the mountain village of Stary Smokovec. Rooms are usually shared on a twin or occasionally triple basis, with en-suite or private bathroom facilities.
Slovak cuisine is hearty and comforting, rooted in Central European traditions. Expect generous portions of meat, cheese, and carbohydrates, with dishes designed to keep you full and satisfied. Whether you’re warming up after a day outdoors or enjoying a long, leisurely meal, Slovak food is all about rich flavours and rustic charm.
Please inform us in advance if you have any dietary requirements or preferences.
The trek can be undertaken by anyone with a good level of fitness who is healthy and determined. Adequate preparation, planning and training is important because the fitter you are the more you will enjoy this experience. An ideal candidate would be a hill walker, an open-minded person with a sense of adventure or someone who would like to take part in a life-changing fundraising experience in the beautiful Indian countryside.
You must be at least 18 years old to participate in this trek. It may be possible for you to participate if you are 16 or 17 years old but you must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. There is no upper age limit
The trek is accompanied by professional English-speaking local guides who have an excellent knowledge of the local culture and hiking in the region. You will also be supported by a UK Different Travel Company tour manager.
During the trek, you will only need to carry a small daypack containing essential items for that day, such as water, snacks, a basic first aid kit, sun protection, and any personal items you may need. Your luggage will remain at the accommodation, allowing you to enjoy the trek without the weight of a heavy pack.
