Fitness Requirements

A Challenging Trip. You will be camping for two nights, the summit day is tiring, the terrain is steep and you will trek for up to 8 hours a day, starting early in the morning. Although tough, this challenge is achievable for anyone with a good level of fitness who has trained appropriately. It is important that you stay positive, remember your goal, and keep your own steady constant pace. The hard work pays off after you reach the top and are greeted by spectacular views.

Mount Toubkal, standing at 4,167 metres, is the highest peak in North Africa and the crowning jewel of Morocco’s Atlas Mountains. Located just a short drive from Marrakech, Toubkal offers a challenging but accessible ascent through stunning alpine landscapes, traditional Berber villages, and rugged valleys. The summit rewards trekkers with sweeping views across the Atlas range and, on clear days, as far as the Sahara Desert. Revered for its natural beauty and cultural significance, Mount Toubkal is a must-climb for adventurers seeking a memorable mountain experience within easy reach of Morocco’s vibrant cities.

This trek is accompanied by professional English-speaking local guides who have an excellent knowledge of trekking in the region and are first aid trained. You will also be supported by a full support crew of cooks, muleteers (and mules) and a Different Travel Company UK tour manager.

The terrain is generally very stony and dry, with some sections of loose scree and small boulders you may have to scramble over. Depending on the time of year, there may be snow on the ground. Towards the summit, there may be exposed areas but your guides will offer you support throughout. There will be lots of uphill sections and subsequent descents, so it is very important that you have done adequate training on hills before departure.

Temperatures in the Atlas Mountains in September can reach highs of 33°C but wind chill may make this feel colder and temperatures can drop to around 10°C after the sun sets. Some snow may remain on the higher slopes of Toubkal and if conditions require it you may need to use crampons (which can be hired in Imlil if required – approx. €5 per day). It is unlikely that snow will fall during the trek, however it is not impossible.

Although the temperatures and conditions above are historically accurate, climate change can impact the seasons so you may experience uncharacteristic conditions during the trip which are out of our control. Should this happen the guide will assess the situation and make decisions to ensure the best enjoyment and ultimately the safety of the group as a whole.

Typically breakfast comprises bread, eggs and hot drinks. Lunch will be bread, cold salad, fresh and dried fruits. Evening meals tend to begin with soup, followed by a tagine (a traditional fish, chicken or lamb stew with vegetables) served with bread and couscous (made from semolina). Fruit and a cup of sweet mint tea are commonly used to end the meal.

You will stay in a guesthouse in Imlil for one night before the trek, camp near the refuge on the mountain for two nights, and then spend the final two nights of the challenge in a hotel in Marrakech. While camping, you will be provided with a foam mattress, but you will need to bring a sleeping bag suitable for temperatures as low as 0°C.

There are shower facilities at the hotel and guesthouse, but there are no bathing facilities at camp. It is recommended that you bring a small pack of baby wipes for personal hygiene. You should bring a towel and environmentally friendly toiletries.

At the hotels, the toilets will be Western-style. There are some toilets at the Toubkal refuge which are basic, shared and mostly squat toilets that usually flush. During the trek, your support crew will dig a hole in the ground near your campsite and cover it with a privacy tent. You will need to bring toilet paper as this is not provided. If you wish to use the toilet during the days on the trail, you will need to find a bush/rock, as there are no toilet facilities along the trail. NEVER leave toilet paper or other litter on the trail.

During the trek, you will need to put any used toilet paper in a nappy bag to dispose of properly at camp.

You must be aged at least 18 to participate unaccompanied. It may be possible for you to participate if you are aged 16 or 17 years old if you are accompanied by a parent or guardian–please contact us for advice. There is no upper age limit. An ideal candidate for the trek would be someone who enjoys being out of their comfort zone and trying something new.

Trekking Mount Toubkal is a physically demanding challenge that requires a good level of fitness. You’ll be walking for several hours each day over varied terrain, including steep ascents, rocky paths, and loose scree, particularly on summit day. While you don’t need technical climbing experience, good stamina and leg strength are essential. If you’re comfortable with long hikes in hilly or mountainous areas and can manage back-to-back days of walking (6–8 hours), you should be well-prepared. Regular cardiovascular exercise and hill or stair training in the lead-up to the trip will greatly improve your enjoyment and success on the trek.

One of the key challenges of the Mount Toubkal trek is the altitude. The summit stands at 4,167 metres, and while this is not considered extreme altitude, it’s high enough for some people to feel the effects of thinner air — such as shortness of breath, fatigue, or mild headaches. The itinerary is designed to help you acclimatise gradually, with a night spent in Imlil (1,740m) and one night near the refuge (around 3,200m) before the summit attempt. Staying well-hydrated, taking the ascent slowly, and listening to your body are essential to managing altitude. Most people complete the trek without serious issues, but being aware of the symptoms of altitude sickness and preparing your body with fitness and rest can make a big difference.

Any luggage that is not needed during the trek can be safely stored at the hotel for the duration of the trip. This allows you to carry only the essentials while trekking, with the peace of mind that your remaining belongings are secure and will be waiting for you upon your return.

Any day-to-day items that you do not need to carry yourself, such as spare clothing, toiletries, or sleeping gear, will be transported in a separate bag to your next accommodation or campsite by mules, so they are ready and waiting for you at the end of each day’s trek.

During the trek, you will only need to carry a small daypack containing essential items for that day, such as water, snacks, a basic first aid kit, sun protection, and any personal items you may need.

 

Itinerary

My Charity UHS Trek Morocco

Day 1 (Thursday 9 September 2027):

London – Marrakech – Imlil (1740m)
Depart London for Marrakech. On arrival, you will transfer by road to Imlil village (approx.1.5 hours), passing green valleys and attractive scenery en route. Imlil is the departure point for treks to Toubkal, and you will stay overnight here at a traditional guest house. You can enjoy the rest of the afternoon exploring and getting acclimatised before a briefing and dinner this evening.

Day 2 (Friday 10 September 2027):

Imlil – Camp (3200m)
After breakfast, you begin the trek to camp with a long ascent along the valley. Halfway through the trek, you will reach Sidi Chamharouch (2350m), a small Islamic shrine believed to heal mental illnesses. Nearby, there are some shops and restaurants where you will stop for lunch. After lunch, you will continue your trek and will arrive at camp, which is the base for the next 2 nights.

Day 3 (Saturday 11 September 2027):

Camp – Toubkal Summit (4167m) – Camp
You will depart very early this morning to trek to the summit of Mount Toubkal at 4,167m – the highest peak in North Africa! The ascent will take 4-6 hours, with varied terrain including large boulders. On the descent, the ground underfoot can be very slippery as you’ll be walking on rocks and shale. Throughout this, however, you will be rewarded with stunning views over the Atlas Mountains and even as far as the Sahara. After savouring the views and celebrating your achievement, you begin your descent back to camp. The rest of the afternoon will be at your leisure, allowing you the opportunity to rest.

Overnight: Camping

Day 4 (Sunday 12 September 2027):

Camp – Imlil – Marrakech
This morning, you will leave the camp to trek back to Imlil village, where you will be met by the vehicle and driven back through the Houaz lowland to the vibrant, bustling and exotic city of Marrakech (journey approx. 1.5 hours) for dinner and overnight at a hotel.
Trekking: Approx. 6 hours
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Overnight: Hotel

Day 5 (Monday 13 September 2027):

Marrakech – London
Transfer to the airport for the return flight. Depending on the flight timing there may be a further opportunity to do some sightseeing.

Ultimately, the safety and health of the group takes priority in all circumstances.

Costs & How to pay

Non-refundable registration fee: £375

and then either…

Sponsorship: £1,900

or

Self-funded: £950 trip costs* and £950 sponsorship for My Charity UHS

SPONSORSHIP

This option is for those who wish to raise sponsorship to cover both the costs of the trip (flights, accommodation, food, guides etc.) and a donation to My Charity UHS. There is a minimum sponsorship amount for each trip that you are required to raise in order to participate.

  • A non-refundable registration fee of £375 is payable at the time of booking.
  • You must then fundraise a minimum of £1,900 for My Charity UHS.
  • 80% of the minimum sponsorship (£1,520) must be paid to the charity by 17 June 2027.
  • The remaining 20% (£380) must be paid by the date of departure.

SELF-FUNDED

This option is for those who choose to pay the trip costs (flights, accommodation, food, guides etc.) themselves while still raising some funds for the charity.

  • A non-refundable registration fee of £375 is payable at the time of booking.
  • You are then asked to pay £950 trip costs* to Different Travel by 1 July 2027.
  • You are asked to fundraise at least £950 for My Charity UHS.
  • 80% of the minimum sponsorship must be paid to the charity by 17 June 2027.
  • The remaining 20% must be paid by the date of departure.

*NB the final trip costs are based on the overall group size and are subject to change. This is the most you will have to pay.

OPTIONAL TRIP EXTENSION

2-night shared occupancy (twin or triple) extension: £200

  • Two additional nights’ accommodation* with breakfast plus a return airport transfer based on 2 people sharing a twin room.

*You will be accommodated in the same hotel as is used for the group during the main trip. This is TBC but is likely to be Hotel El Andalous or similar.

  • Payments for any additional arrangements must be received before they can be confirmed.

2-night single occupancy extension: £270

  • Two additional nights’ accommodation* with breakfast plus a return airport transfer in a single occupancy room.

*You will be accommodated in the same hotel as is used for the group during the main trip. This is TBC but is likely to be Hotel El Andalous or similar.

  • Payments for any additional arrangements must be received before they can be confirmed.

Independent extension: £45

  • Fly home on any date of your choosing (subject to flight schedules). Please specify your preferred date in the booking notes section.
  • You will need to arrange your own accommodation and airport transfers for your additional days.
  • The cost is £45 plus any difference in cost in the flight airfare on your chosen return date.
