2nd Oct 2027 - 14th Oct 2027
13 days/India /Moderate to Challenging
Embark on an unforgettable journey through the heart of Northern India, combining meaningful community work with an awe-inspiring Himalayan trekking adventure. This unique itinerary begins in the bustling capital of Delhi, where you’ll spend time contributing to a local community project that supports vulnerable children and families. Past groups have painted hospice bedrooms, built playgrounds, and renovated therapy centres, offering real, hands-on help where it’s most needed.
After leaving Delhi, you’ll head north to the tranquil hill station of McLeodganj, home to the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile. From here, a spectacular multi-day trek takes you deep into the dramatic Dhauladhar mountain range. You’ll hike through ancient forests, remote villages, high-altitude meadows, and along glacial rivers, camping under starlit skies in some of India’s most breathtaking natural landscapes. Along the way, you’ll experience the rich cultural heritage of Himachal Pradesh and enjoy warm hospitality in Tibetan and Indian communities.
The journey ends with a visit to one of India’s most iconic landmarks, the Taj Mahal, offering a final moment of wonder before heading home. This is a journey of purpose, challenge and discovery—ideal for those looking to make a difference and explore off the beaten track.
The India: Himalayan Trek and Dalai Lama trek is graded moderate to challenging as you will trek over varying terrain for up to 8 hours a day, carrying a small daypack which may weigh up to 6kg, and camping in basic campsites along the way. You will also be exposed to altitudes up to a maximum of 2,945m (9,663ft).
The Taj Mahal is one of the world’s most iconic and breathtaking monuments, a masterpiece of Mughal architecture and a symbol of eternal love. Located in Agra, northern India, this white marble mausoleum was commissioned in 1632 by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died during childbirth. The Taj Mahal combines elements of Persian, Islamic, and Indian architectural styles, and is renowned for its perfect symmetry, intricate carvings, and the way its surface reflects the changing light of day. Set within beautifully landscaped gardens and flanked by reflecting pools, the monument creates a serene and awe-inspiring atmosphere. At dawn, the marble glows softly in the early light, making a sunrise visit an unforgettable experience. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, the Taj Mahal continues to draw millions of visitors with its beauty and poignant history.
Delhi, India’s vibrant capital, is a city of striking contrasts where ancient history meets modern life. Bustling markets, grand Mughal architecture, colonial-era buildings, and contemporary developments coexist in a colourful tapestry of culture. Key sights include the towering Qutub Minar, the domes of Humayun’s Tomb, and the chaotic charm of Old Delhi’s Chandni Chowk. As a gateway to the north, Delhi offers a dynamic introduction to India’s diversity.
In stark contrast to the city’s energetic pace, the Indian Himalayas offer peace, breathtaking natural beauty, and a strong spiritual presence. Stretching along the northern border, this region is home to soaring peaks, alpine meadows, and remote villages. Dharamshala and McLeodganj, nestled in Himachal Pradesh, are especially notable as the home-in-exile of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government. These hill towns are rich in Tibetan culture, offering monasteries, meditation centres, and mountain views that inspire reflection and awe.
Together, Delhi and the Himalayas provide a powerful and balanced experience: one filled with the noise and colour of urban India, and the stillness and spirituality of the mountains. It’s a journey that combines cultural immersion, natural beauty, and meaningful encounters in equal measure.
The trek is accompanied by professional English-speaking local guides who have an excellent knowledge of the local culture and hiking in the region. You will also be supported by a team of cooks and porters, a UK Different Travel Company tour manager. At the project you will be supported by a local project co-ordinator and staff.
The terrain will vary throughout the trek but in general will be undulating (uphill and downhill). There are very few flat sections so you should ensure your training includes plenty of hills. Underfoot there will be stony pathways, grass, rocks and perhaps a few small streams to cross too. Each day you will cover approximately 12-15km (7-9 miles) which, because of the variable terrain, can take up to 8 hours to cover.
In early to mid-October, the climate offers a diverse range of conditions as you travel from the lowland cities to the Himalayan foothills. In Delhi and Agra, expect hot, dry weather with daytime temperatures ranging from 30 to 35°C, and warm evenings, ideal for sightseeing but requiring sun protection and breathable clothing. As you head north into the hills of Dharamshala and McLeodganj, the air becomes cooler and fresher, with daytime temperatures between 18 and 25°C.
During the trek, especially at higher altitudes around Kareri Lake and Triund, temperatures can drop significantly; days may be a pleasant 10 to 18°C, while nights can fall close to freezing (0–5°C), particularly under clear skies. October is generally dry, with minimal rainfall and crisp, clear mountain air, making it one of the best times of year for trekking. Layered clothing is essential to stay comfortable, as you’ll experience both warm days and chilly nights.
Although the conditions mentioned are historically accurate, climate change can impact the seasons, so you may experience uncharacteristic weather during the trip, which is out of our control. The guides will assess the situation and make decisions to ensure the best enjoyment and ultimately the safety of the group as a whole.
Meals during the trek are cooked by your trek chef and will be eaten in a mess tent where a table, chairs, plates, mugs and cutlery is provided. Meals are delicious and plentiful and mainly Indian style (although there may be some Western-style meals).
Special dietary requirements can be accommodated if we are advised in advance but please note that we cannot guarantee that food preparation will have taken place in a contamination free environment.
During the trek, you’ll stay in three-person tents, with two people sharing each tent. Sleeping mats are provided, though you’re welcome to bring your own if you prefer extra comfort.
Two nights will be spent on an air-conditioned sleeper train, with individual beds separated by privacy curtains.
In Delhi and Dharamshala, accommodation will be in hotels on a twin or triple-share basis.
While camping, toilet facilities will consist of a simple hole dug into the ground, enclosed within a small privacy tent. Toilet paper is not provided, so please bring your own—biodegradable toilet paper is strongly recommended.
During the trek, if you need to use the toilet along the trail, you’ll need to find a discreet spot away from the path. Any toilet paper used must be placed in a nappy sack and disposed of properly back at camp. Never leave toilet paper or any litter (including fruit peel, seeds, food wrappers, etc.) on the trail.
At the hotels, you will have access to Western-style sit-down flushing toilets.
Train toilets are very basic and may not have running water, so please be prepared.
The trek can be undertaken by anyone with a good level of fitness, who is healthy and determined. Adequate preparation, planning and training is important because the fitter you are the more you will enjoy this experience. An ideal candidate would be a hill walker, an open-minded person with a sense of adventure or someone who would like to take part in a life-changing fundraising experience in the beautiful Indian countryside.
You must be at least 18 years old to participate on this trek. It may be possible for you to participate if you are 16 or 17 years old but you must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. There is no upper age limit
It is recommended that you are of a good fitness level before departure to ensure fast recovery from each day’s exertions. An ideal candidate would be someone who enjoys being out of their comfort zone and trying something new, with a flexible and open minded personality. If you do not regularly exercise it is advised that you start training before departure to ensure your best chance of enjoyment on the trip.
Whilst it is difficult to specifically prepare for trekking at higher altitudes, it helps to be physically prepared for the exertions of the trekking day by training in advance. It is advised that you arrive for the trek feeling comfortable trekking for periods of up to 7 or 8 hours for at least two days consecutively. Having a positive and determined attitude is also a key element to your success on the trek.
Any luggage not needed during the trek can be safely stored at the hotel in McLeodganj for the duration of the trip. Please note that it will stay with you during the first couple of days while travelling to and from the project by train.
Any day-to-day items that you do not need to carry yourself, such as spare clothing, toiletries, or sleeping gear, will be transported in a separate bag to your next accommodation or campsite by vehicle pack animal, so they are ready and waiting for you at the end of each day’s trek.
During the trek, you will only need to carry a small daypack containing essential items for that day, such as water, snacks, a basic first aid kit, sun protection, and any personal items you may need.
