Bluetits: Northern Iceland Swim Adventure 2026

3rd Nov 2026 - 7th Nov 2026

5 days/Iceland /Moderate

Overview

Join us as we return to Iceland on a brand new Bluetit adventure!

After several incredible trips in the south, we thought it was high time we widened our horizons and explored other parts of this fascinating island! Join us as we explore the spectacular northern shores on this exciting two-centre holiday.

Take a dip in stunning natural baths, majestic waterfalls, geothermal waters, and enjoy a one-in-a lifetime whale watching trip!

This trip has been designed with the Bluetits Chill Swimmers, a social enterprise committed to empowering an inclusive community of cold water dippers. They now have more than 100,000 Bluetits across the globe.

Join us as we return to Iceland for another overseas Bluetits adventure!

This trip has been graded as moderate, our lowest level of difficulty. You do not need to be a member of the Bluetits Chill Swimmers or a great swimmer to take part in this adventure. The Bluetit ethos is about encouraging people to enjoy the water, even if it is just dipping your toes in!

This is not a challenge, just a chance to meet some like-minded individuals for a fun weekend.

You do not need to be a Bluetit or have any experience of wild swimming to take part in this adventure. It is advised that you know how to tread water to be able to get the most enjoyment out of the trip.

This trip has been graded as moderate for someone of good fitness. A Bluetit motto is ‘No Bluetit Left Behind!’ so what is most important is that you feel able to enjoy the weekend.

You will never be pressured to go out of your depth or beyond your comfort zone when it comes to swimming but you must be able to tread water in order to get the most out of this wild swimming adventure.

Temperatures can typically peak to around 4°C during the day and drop to around -3°C at night however you must be prepared for variations to this which are out of our control. High snow/rainfall at this time of year is likely.

Please note: the temperatures and conditions above are historically accurate but climate change can impact the seasons so you may experience uncharacteristic conditions during the trip which are out of our control. The guides will assess the situation and make decisions to ensure the best enjoyment and safety of the group.

The average sea temperature in November in the Akuyeri and Skjálfandi Bay areas is between 3-7°C and at but can feel colder.

The waters in the at Mývatn Nature baths are around 36-40°C and similarly Geosea is typically 38-39°C.

The large pool at the Forest Lagoon is kept at around 37°C and the smaller pool is maintained around 40°C. There is also a Finnish dry sauna with temperatures around 80°C and a cold pool at 11°C.

Please note the Icelandic weather can have a dramatic effect and the temperatures can vary.

We encourage you to take part in ‘The Bluetit Chorus’, which involves plenty of singing, shouting and the odd swear word to help your breath to acclimatise to the cold. Only you know your body, and we advise that you take things easy and allow your body and mind to acclimatise to the cold gradually.

You will be provided with plenty of hearty Icelandic meals which typically include fish and lamb and will keep your energy levels high for each day of discovery. Please note that dinner is not included on day 2.

Please inform us in advance if you have any dietary requirements or preferences.

Anyone aged 18+ can take part in the adventure. You must have a good level of fitness, able to self-manage (e.g. you know how to keep hydrated, nourished, warm and dry) and be in good health. You will enjoy the trip to the fullest if you enjoy being outdoors and want to gently challenge your limits with a supportive group of people. The Bluetit values are Trust, Fun and Inclusivity, and if you share these, you will love this holiday!

Please also note that all participants must be able to swim and tread water comfortably.

You will be accompanied by a Bluetit host who is a qualified swim coach as well as a local guide who has an excellent knowledge of culture in the region. The guides are first aid trained and will support you throughout your journey.

Accommodation will be in a centrally located 3* hotel on a twin-share basis. There may be single rooms available, please enquire about costs and availability.

You will need to wear comfortable walking boots or sturdy trainers for when we walk to swim locations. We advise you to bring waterproofs given the inclement weather we can experience in Iceland.

Normal swimwear is adequate for swimming. A tow float, swim shoes and brightly-coloured hat are essential for safety reasons. Other swimming accessories, such as wet suits, rash vests, swim shoes, gloves, goggles etc., are not essential but may make you feel more comfortable.

You will also need to bring some dry clothes to change into after your swim. Your body temperature continues to cool for 20-30 minutes after you exit the water and warming up immediately is essential. Loose-fitting clothes, such as big fleecy pyjamas and oversized jumpers, are easier to put on with numb hands and fingers. A wooly hat and big gloves or mittens are also helpful.

Please see the full suggested kit list below.

Before entering the water at public pools or hot springs in Iceland you are requested to shower, using the soap provided, without your swimming costume (same-sex showers are provided). This is to keep the water clean and reduces the need for too many chemicals to be added to the water.

Itinerary

Day 1 (Tuesday 3 November 2026):

London – Akureyi
Fly from London to Akureyri.   On arrival we start as we mean to go on, with a traditional Icelandic sauna experience, with cooling dips in the sea in between sessions!  Afterwards it’s a short drive to the Forest Lagoon geothermal spa. The spa’s unique location surrounded by birch and pine trees truly sets it apart.   Check into our hotel in Akureyri early evening before a welcome dinner.
Meals: Dinner

Day 2 (Wednesday 4 Novemeber 2026):

Hauganes
This morning we head a tiny fishing village on the west coast of the Eyjafjörður Fjord, where we embark on a 2.5-hour whale watching tour, with frequent sightings of humpback whales, minke whales, dolphins, and porpoises likely!
Upon returning to the harbour, we’ll enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before heading to the beach of Hauganes. With its picturesque black sand beach and sea-swimming facilities, Hauganes is one of Iceland’s best-kept secrets.
In recent years, hot excess geothermal water from the village – once flowing unused into the sea – has been repurposed to heat a series of hot tubs placed right on the beach.
This evening is free for you to enjoy dinner at your leisure.
Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Day 3 (Thursday 5 November 2026):

Godafoss – Mývatn Nature baths
Today we head to the Mývatn region, renowned for its stunning natural beauty and geological wonders. Our first stop will be at the iconic Godafoss waterfall, with a chance to exploring the Dimmuborgir Lava Field, before heading to the Mývatn Nature Baths.  Here you can enjoy a relaxing dip amidst clouds of steam rising from a fissure deep in the Earth’s surface, culminating with a luxurious swim in a pool of geothermal water drawn from depths of up to 2,500 meters.   We check in at our hotel  in Mývatn this evening in time for dinner.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4 (Friday 6 November 2026):

Námaskarð – Dettifoss – Geosea baths
After breakfast it’s a short drive to the Námaskarð Geothermal Area with its steaming, sulfur-rich landscape, packed with boiling mud pools and vibrant mineral deposits. A short, flat walk lets us experience the alien terrain up close. We then continue our scenic drive towards Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall, thundering 44 meters into the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. After experiencing its raw power up-close we drive onwards to Húsavík. Nestled on the edge of Skjálfandi Bay, this charming coastal town is renowned for its rich marine life, colourful harbour, and warm local hospitality.
We will have lunch in a harbour restaurant and a leisurely walk along the waterfront before and relaxing in stunning geothermal sea baths perched on a cliff with panoramic views of the bay. Unlike typical hot springs, GeoSea uses naturally heated, mineral-rich seawater known for its skin-soothing properties. We return to our hotel in Mývatn this evening.
