The Challenge

Experience the stunning landscape of the Piatra Craiului National Park and the Bucegi plateau on a challenging 4-day trek through the wilderness of the Romanian countryside. Keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife such as deer, goats and even brown bear which still roam the area, and enjoy the stunning delicate wild flowers that bloom at this time of year.

Itinerary

Day 1 (Thu ): London - Bucharest
Fly from London to Bucharest and transfer to a central hotel for the night.(D)

Day 2 (Fri): Bucharest - Sinaia
This morning transfer to Sinaia (approx 2 hours) where we will begin our trek in the Bucegi mountains, passing the famous Sphynx and ending the day at Omu Hut, the highest altitude hut in Romania (2507m!). The hut is basic, with mixed male/female dormitory style rooms, gas heating and an outside toilet (no running water). Today will be mostly uphill, and you will be carrying the things you need for the night and following day in your rucksack but there are some stunning views from the top which will make all your effort worthwhile.(BLD)

Day 3 (Sat): Transylvania
We continue hiking today, with a long descent on a quiet side of the mountain with the possibility of spotting the wild chamois goat. This afternoon we will walk all the way to Bran (Dracula's) Castle before staying overnight in a local guesthouse in Bran (with access to your main luggage).

Day 4 (Sun): Transylvania
This morning we will walk from the guesthouse to the mountain villages near the castle where you will be able to observe the local people working on their self-sufficient farms and taking care of their animals as they have done for many years. Overnight at a family run guesthouse with a home cooked dinner. (BLD)

Day 5 (Mon): Transylvania - Zarnesti - Bucharest
A short, mostly downhill morning walk (2-3 hours) will take us through an old forest and then a deep gorge down into the town of Zarnesti. We will transfer to the bear sanctuary to learn more about the bears, their habitat and the dangers they face. We then transfer to Bucharest with the option of visiting the famous Peles Palace en route.

Day 6 (Tue):Bucharest - London
Return to Bucharest Airport for the return flight to London.

N.B. This itinerary may change due to unusual weather patterns, wildlife movements, the ability of the group and so on. We will do our best to keep to the set itinerary however we cannot be held responsible for changes that might occur outside of our control.
